How to get a Rhode Island voter list for your campaign

Step by step

1. Find your district. Check your qualifying paperwork or your county elections office for the exact district, ward or precinct your race covers.
2. Order the matching list from the Rhode Island Department of State. Fill out the one-page List of Registered Voters Order Form, check your city or town or your Senate or House district, choose email, and send it to elections@sos.ri.gov or mail it to the Elections Division. Use the table below to pick the right list.
3. Get your file. Sent by email, or as a SharePoint download link if the file is too big to attach. Printouts are also available. CDs are only for statewide and congressional lists. Payment, if any, must arrive before your order is processed.

Tips before you order

• Choose email on the form. City, town, Senate and House lists are free that way and $25 on paper.
• Order the city or town list for a ward or school committee district and filter on the ward or precinct column.
• Once you declare, your local board of canvassers must give you free, up to once a month, the names and addresses of new registrants, voters who moved and voters removed or made inactive (R.I. Gen. Laws § 17-9.1-21).
• Paying by credit card adds a 3% fee. Call the Elections Division at 401-222-2340 to pay by phone.
• The list has no voting history, phone numbers or ages. Collect phone numbers at the door and record them in CampaignKnock as you go.

Who can get a Rhode Island voter list?

State law provides these lists to party chairs and candidates for state or congressional office, for use only to further your candidacy in the upcoming primary or general election (R.I. Gen. Laws § 17-6-5). Misuse is a misdemeanor (§ 17-6-7), and the statutory oath has you promise not to let unauthorized people use or copy the list (§ 17-6-6). The current order form does not ask whether you are a candidate.

What is in a Rhode Island voter list?

It includes voter name, party affiliation, street address, city or town, congressional, senate and house district, ward and precinct. It does not include phone numbers, email addresses, date of birth, where the voter registered, address confidentiality program participants.
