Who can order it

Anyone may request it, but your request must say the data will be used for an "elections purpose." New York Election Law § 3-103(5) prohibits using voter registration information for anything else. The State Board says an elections purpose is read broadly and includes campaigning, voter outreach and fundraising.

Tips before you order

Ask for only your county or district, not the whole state. It keeps the file small enough to work with.
The file has no school district column, so school board candidates should ask their county board of elections how to get a list for their district.
Voting history is packed into one column, with each election separated by a semicolon. Use it to find voters who turn out in local elections.
Include the words "elections purpose" in your request. Requests without that statement can be denied.
