How to get a New Mexico voter list for your campaign

Step by step

1. Find your district. Check your qualifying paperwork or your county elections office for the exact district, ward or precinct your race covers.
2. Order the matching list from the New Mexico Secretary of State. Fill out and sign the Voter Data Request Form (the state's Voter Information Authorization), describe how your campaign will use the data, and send it to the Bureau of Elections (Elections@sos.nm.gov). Your county clerk also sells the same data. Use the table below to pick the right list.
3. Get your file. Choose an electronic file, a printed list or mailing labels on the request form. Printed lists cost $5 and labels $20 per 1,000 voters. No request costs more than $600.

Tips before you order

• Check the Districts, Voting History and Method Voted boxes. Otherwise you get only names, addresses, birth year, party and precinct.
• Voting history costs $1 more per 1,000 voters than the file without it. It is worth it for a local race.
• Decide whether you want inactive voters. They have not voted in several cycles or appear to have moved, so most door-knocking campaigns leave them out.
• Bernalillo County charges the same $4 per 1,000 records. Request it through the county clerk's contact form.
• Phone numbers appear only for voters who agreed to share them. Collect the rest at the door and record them in CampaignKnock as you go.

Who can get a New Mexico voter list?

Anyone who signs the state affidavit, but only for governmental or election campaign purposes. The affidavit says the data will not be transferred, copied, shared or conveyed to anyone outside your campaign and will not be made public on the internet (NMSA § 1-4-5.5). Misuse is a fourth degree felony with a $100 fine for each line of voter data (NMSA § 1-4-5.6).

What is in a New Mexico voter list?

It includes registrant id, voter name, physical and mailing address, year of birth, party, precinct, phone number, if the voter agreed to share it, all districts, if you ask for them, voting history and method voted (absentee, early or election day), if you ask for them. It does not include social security numbers, month and day of birth, email addresses, how anyone voted.
